Wastewater problems in the Canary Islands

Sewage in the sea is causing problems with faecal bacteria and microalgae in the Canary Islands. Untreated sewage is being discharged into the Atlantic Ocean, where it is causing pollution. Water quality is deteriorating and entire sections of beach are being closed off. The government is paying fines running into millions to the EU. However, no real solutions are forthcoming.
