A strong Calima carrying Saharan dust swept across Tenerife, La Gomera and El Hierro on Monday. The forecast is based on the Copernicus CAMS model and on measurements from the European Environment Agency.
A daily average of 95 micrograms of PM10 particulate matter per cubic metre is recorded in Tenerife, meaning that air quality is considered poor. Levels of 66 micrograms per cubic metre are forecast for La Gomera, and 57 micrograms for El Hierro. Air quality is poor there too.
Researchers at the University of La Laguna have found that the risk of a heart attack rises by up to two per cent during such Calima weather conditions. An article on Calima and at-risk groups in the Canary Islands has already explained which groups are particularly at risk.
Calima: High-risk groups should avoid strenuous outdoor activity
The fine Saharan dust can irritate the eyes and respiratory tract. Older people, pregnant women and those with asthma or other respiratory or heart conditions should therefore avoid physical exertion outdoors. Keeping windows and doors closed can help, as can drinking plenty of fluids.
