The Spanish Meteorological Agency AEMET has issued a yellow warning for heavy rain across the whole of La Palma on Friday, valid from 4.00 am to 2.59 pm. Up to 15 millimetres of rain may fall within an hour.

AEMET estimates there is a 40 to 70 per cent chance that these rainfall amounts will actually be reached. According to meteorologists‘ assessments, the south and west of the island are most likely to be affected. Incidentally, a previous yellow rain warning for La Palma had already predicted the same maximum rainfall of 15 millimetres per hour.

In the higher elevations of the island, torrents can form rapidly during heavy rain or thunderstorms. They follow the barrancos – the deeply incised gorges – and often reach the coast. Particular caution is therefore advised in the gorges and along their edges.

Lanzarote: Strong Calima winds are causing air quality to deteriorate

This has nothing to do with the official warning: the Calima forecast from Teneriffa News predicts strong Calima on Lanzarote for Wednesday and Thursday. It is based on the Copernicus CAMS model and on measurements from the European Environment Agency. The daily average concentration of PM10 particulate matter will rise to 54 micrograms per cubic metre on Wednesday, meaning air quality is classified as poor. Saharan dust had previously polluted the air on several islands, at the time coinciding with an orange-level rain warning on Tenerife.

The fine dust from the Sahara irritates the eyes and airways. Anyone with asthma or another respiratory or heart condition, as well as older people and pregnant women, should avoid physical exertion outdoors. You can minimise the impact by keeping windows and doors closed and drinking plenty of fluids.
